Texas vs Texas Tech Prediction

by Asa AgnoliFebruary 26, 2021

Texas vs Texas Tech Prediction: The 14th Ranked Texas Longhorns will be going on the road to take on their in-state rivals, the 18th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders. There are only four games left before conference tournament play begins and teams in the Big 12 are fighting for a spot.

Longhorns Preview

The Texas Longhorns are coming off an overtime victory against a good Kansas Jayhawks team but remain in 5th place in the Big 12. A win in tomorrow’s matchup would jump Texas to fourth place but a loss would push them down to sixth place.

The Longhorns had 5 players drop double-digit points against the Jayhawks and are hoping to do the same against the Red Raiders. As a squad, the Longhorns averaged 75.7 points, 40 rebounds, 13 assists, and a shooting percentage of 44.9%.

Texas gives up 68.7 points to their opponents on average. Longhorns guard Courtney Ramey is going to be a very important piece in this matchup. Last game Ramey put up a team-high 15 points coming in clutch for Texas.

The Junior is averaging 14.1 points with 2.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He a shooting a team-high 43.7% from behind the arc. Ramey will probably be matched up against Mac McClung making this battle very important for Saturday’s showdown.

Greg Brown is another key player as he changes the ceiling for Texas on both sides. Jericho Sims and Kai Jones will be needed heavily on defense to stop Kevin McCullar and Marcos Santos-Silva. Texas will need to slow down Mac McClung if they want to walk away with the Victory.

The starters will be Jericho Sims (F), Greg Brown (F), Andrew Jones (G), Matt Coleman III (G), and Courtney Ramey (G).

Red Raiders Preview

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have been in a slump losing their last 3 games and getting bumped down to seventh place in the Big 12. The Red Raider’s last loss came from the Oklahoma State Cowboys by a score of 74-69.

The Red Raiders need to win this game and they have homecourt advantage which will help but they need to focus and hit shots on Saturday. Georgetown Transfer Mac McClung has taken on the responsibility of being the captain of the Red Raiders offense.

McClung is averaging 16.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and almost a steal per game showing he is working on both ends of the court. In their last loss, McClung was matched up with Cade Cunningham and put up 17 points on 42% shooting.

Cade is said to be one of the top guards in the NCAA so if McClung can do what he did against Cade and continue to drive to the basket on Saturday the Longhorns will struggle greatly.

Kevin McCullar will be another key player in the game as he will be used in the high post consistently on offense and provide defense down low against Greg Brown. The Red Raiders will also be looking for help from Terrance Shannon and Kyler Edwards in the shooting category.

The Texas Tech defense is the most important factor and guard Jamarius Burton is now eligible to play after transferring from Wichita State. If he does play we will all see how good he is defensively and will provide great support for the Red Raiders.

The starters are Mac McClung (G), Terrence Shannon Jr. (G), Kyler Edwards (G), Marcus Santos-Silva (F), and Micah Peavy (F).

Texas vs. Texas Tech Prediction

The Red Raiders beat the Longhorns back in January and they did not shoot well but they took many free throws and didn’t have as many turnovers or mistakes. Even though they have recent struggles expect the Red Raiders to call down and grab this much-needed win at home.
