Brentford vs Arsenal Prediction & Preview
The strongest football league is finally back, and no, I am not talking about the self-proclaimed best football league, the Spanish LaLiga. We’re talking about the English Premier League, which starts on Friday, August 13, with the opening-round fixture between Arsenal and the newly promoted Brentford.
As an interesting fact, Brentford is owned by a well-known professional sports bettor, Matthew Benham, who owns a betting syndicate called SmartOdds, sports betting exchange called Matchbook, and another football club from Denmark, FC Midtjylland.
After 74 years, seven consecutive top-half finishes in the Championship, two disappointing playoff appearances, the Bees have finally secured themselves a promotion into the English top tier after beating Swansea 2:0 at Wembley Stadium back in May.
Since then, Brentford have played a total of seven friendly matches. They won five fixtures, three against low-ranked UK teams, one against LaLiga’s Valencia, and one against fellow EPL club Watford. The Bees also managed a 2:2 draw against Manchester United and lost 0:1 against West Ham.
Despite interest from other clubs, Brentford managed to keep their start striker Ivan Toney (33 league goals last season), and he is expected to be fit enough to start against Arsenal.
Josh Dasilva (previously Arsenal academy player) is injured, and so far, there is no date for his return. They also signed Kristoffer Ajer from FC Celtic for a club-record fee of 15.70m. So, apart from missing Josh Dasilva, the Bees should be fully ready for their upcoming match.
Arsenal finished the previous season in eighth place, but that was largely thanks to their impressive post-Boxing day run, which saw Arsenal collect a whopping 47 points. The Gunners also won their last five Premier League matches, and they will be eager to extend their run against Brentford.
It’s also fair to mention that Arsenal haven’t conceded a single goal when playing away against newly-promoted teams last season, so they have that going for them.
With a couple of new signings and without the distraction of European football, Arsenal are expected to do better this season. Still, I don’t believe the Gunners will be competitive against the likes of City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
They’ve played a total of six pre-season friendlies and managed to win only two; 4:1 against Millwall and 4:1 against Watford. The remaining four resulted in three losses against Tottenham (0:1), Chelsea (1:2), and Hibernian (1:2), and one 2:2 draw against the Rangers.
Arsenal have a fairly fit squad apart from a couple of injuries; Eddie Nketiah (ankle), Gabriel Magalhaes (knee), and Thomas Partey (ankle). Rob Holding apparently wasn’t fit enough for their pre-season friendly against Tottenham, so I doubt he will be ready to play against Brentford.
Brentford vs Arsenal Head-to-head Matches
The last time these two played was back in July 2020, in a friendly match in which Brentford managed to win 3:2. I would not put too much weight on the said match, if any – it was simply a friendly, warm-up match that served more of an opportunity for the coaches to rotate their rosters and give less-used players a chance to prove themselves.
What’s more, winning these kinds of matches doesn’t mean a lot to top-tier clubs like Arsenal, but it gives a good morale boost to smaller clubs.
If we go back to 2018, these two teams met in the 1/16 finals of the EFL Cup, where Arsenal outclassed Brentford 3:1, thanks to two goals from Danny Welbeck and one from Alexandre Lacazette.
Brentford vs Arsenal Betting Odds & Lines
Arsenal are coming into the match as betting favorites, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. They are priced around 1.91 to win, while the Bees are priced at around 4.33 to cause an upset. The draw is currently at approximately 3.80.
Looking at the Asian Handicap line; Arsenal are favored to cover the -0.50 line at 1.90, while Brentford are priced at 2.02 at the +0.50 line.
At the current odds, I don’t think there is any value backing the away team. Sure, they definitely have the quality on their side, but this is the season’s opening match, and there are many unknowns. So at these odds, they are not worth the bet.
The same goes for the Over 2.50 goals; considering the way these two teams like to play, I don’t expect a lot of goals here. Both clubs have recently transitioned to a more defensive-minded, controlled style of play, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense for the Over 2.50 to be priced so low.
Brentford vs Arsenal Prediction
Brentford have waited for 74 years to join the big boys, and what better way to let everyone know that the Bees are here to stay than to beat Arsenal in the opening match of EPL! There should be no issues with the morale on either side.
The opening matches are tricky to predict. However, as mentioned previously, I don’t think there is any value backing the visitors here, so going with Brentford to take something away from their first match of the season looks like the best play here.
The general public expects goals here, but I would not be surprised if any of these two sides win the match with 1:0, so a punt on under 1.50 goals seems like a good gamble at these odds!
Prediction: Brentford +0.50 Asian Handicap – 2.03 at Bet365 (0.50 Units)
Prediction: Under 1.50 Goals – 4.06 at Pinnacle (0.50 Units)
