Patriots vs Dolphins Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 1
- Rookie Mac Jones wins starting job
- 6th overall pick Jaylen Waddle looks to make an impact
- Battle of the Alabama quarterbacks
The long-awaited first week of the National Football League is here! On Sunday at 4:25 PM ET, the New England Patriots host the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The Patriots, who went undefeated in the preseason, look to continue that streak with recently named starting rookie quarterback Mac Jones.
Conversely, the Dolphins look for their third win with sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa under center as they went 2-1 in the preseason. These two strong secondaries led by J.C. Jackson on the Patriots and Xavien Howard on the Dolphins seem to be the focal points of each team and will be the reason why one team comes out victorious on Sunday.

Patriots vs. Dolphins Prediction: Spread
Though both teams will come out fighting in hopes to start their regular season off with a win, I believe the Miami Dolphins are slight favorites in this game. Though they are the underdogs, I believe they can cover the spread. The Miami offensive, with their newly strengthened offense, should outmaneuver the injured New England defense (Jalen Mills and Stephon Gilmore, ankle and quadriceps, respectively).

Patriots vs Dolphins Prediction: MoneyLine
As both the Dolphins and Patriots are looking to turn things around after last year’s playoff-less season, each team has a lot to fight for. Though this game will be a close nail-biter, I predict the Miami Dolphins will overcome the New England Patriots this Sunday.
The major question mark for both the Dolphins and the Patriots seems to be over the quarterback situation. Though the Dolphins have sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, his efficiency, arm strength, and decisiveness are still concerns for many. Will Tua live up to his 5th overall draft pick in 2020?
The addition of receiver Jaylen Waddle, a familiar face from Alabama, and also deep-threat receiver Will Fuller, should help Tua make his case this year. Head coach Brian Flores came out and told the press the Dolphins would run a running back committee this year, led by Miles Gaskins, Malcolm Brown, and Salvon Ahmed. Therefore, Tua has all the necessary weapons to defeat the Patriots this weekend and many more formidable opponents this season.
On the other hand, the main question now is: is Mac Jones truly ready for the NFL? I personally don’t think so. Only 10 days ago, on August 31st, Mac Jones was declared the starting quarterback for the Patriots after Cam Newton was fired. Questions regarding whether he has had enough practice and workload with the starting unit have been raised all around the Patriots locker room. Being the 5th selected quarterback of his draft class at the 15th overall pick in the first round, Mac Jones has a lot to prove this year.
Ever since the departure of Tom Brady, the Patriots franchise has looked awful, and this year seems like it will be another awful year. The questionable quarterback play and injured secondary should allow the Dolphins to win on Sunday.

Patriots vs Dolphins Prediction: Total
The total for this matchup is 43.5 points, which is relatively high. I believe the strong Dolphins secondary in combination with the inexperienced Patriots offense will not reach that 43.5 point mark. The past seven matchups between these two squads have resulted in hitting the under 5 of 7 times; therefore, I would bet the under for this matchup.
