by Rebecca CrilleySeptember 15, 2021
  • Saints will become 2-0
  • Panthers will get a loss at home
  • Saints will be in a top spot in the NFC South

It’s the Panthers and Saints in this Sunday afternoon matchup in Carolina. These two teams have met up at least once a year since 1995. They are conference rivals and have played in a total of 53 games. The Saints are 28-25 all-time against the Panthers. In all of these games, the Saints have scored a total of 1,206 points while the Panthers only scored a total of 1,154.

The last time we saw these two teams play was in October of last year. The Saints won in dramatic fashion by a field goal with a score of 27-24. In that game, the Saints defense did not allow the Panthers to score in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Drew Brees led the team down the field and they made a game-winning field goal with eight minutes left in the game.

The Saints’ defense in that game made some big plays late in the fourth quarter. The Panthers quarterback at the time Teddy Bridgewater was sacked on a 3rd to get the Panthers in field goal range to tie the game. The Panthers were out of field goal range and their kicker, Joey Slye, had to attempt a 65-yard field goal however he was just short.

Panthers vs Saints Prediction: Spread

In week one, the Saints played the Packers and very much limited NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the offense to a field goal winning by a commanding 38-3. The Saints defense including Cam Jordan and Marcus Davenport put pressure on Rodgers early in the game. Paulson Adebo, a rookie cornerback, intercepted a pass by Rodgers in the red zone on a drive that would have led to a touchdown.

Later in the third quarter, the Saints defense intercepted Rodgers again making that two for the game. The defense limited Rodgers to 133 yards and 15 completions out of 28 attempts. In this game look for the defense to cover the spread against the Panthers in week 2.

Panthers vs Saints Prediction: MoneyLine

The Saints’ defense is going to come up in a major way in this game. They are looking to stay on top of the NFC South and clinch another divisional win. They finished 12-4 last season one spot ahead of Tampa Bay. It will be a close race for the number one spot between the two teams in the division.

This season’s defense will be a key factor in winning and with defensive playmakers like All-Pro Safety Marcus Williams and All-Pro defensive end Cam Jordan the Saints will surely be set. In this game, look for the Saints defense to cover the money line.

Panthers vs Saints Prediction: Total

The last three games the Panthers and Saints played against each other the total has been more than 44 points. In 2019 there were two games played, the first game in November they had a combined total of 65 points with the Saints winning 34-31. The second game played in December they had a combined total of 52 points and again the Saints winning 42-10. Last game in 2020 also went over 44 points with the Saints winning 27-24 for a total of 51 points.

The Panthers’ offense will get some points on the board during the game. It is a home game for them so the home field advantage will take effect. However, it will not be enough to win the game for them. The Saints’ defense will be present in this game as well as the offense led by Jameis Winston.
