Falcons vs Panthers Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 8

by Allyson ParkOctober 27, 2021
  • Falcons are slowly improving
  • Panthers need McCaffrey back
  • Sam Darnold isn’t enough for the Panthers

In the eighth week of the NFL regular season, the Atlanta Falcons (3-3) host the Carolina Panthers (3-4) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, with kickoff scheduled for Sunday at 1 pm EST.

In this NFC South rivalry game, both these teams are looking to get their fourth win of the season, and they both need it. The Falcons, coming into this game off the heels of Sunday’s 30-28 win against the Miami Dolphins, are hoping to earn their third win in a row this week. The Panthers, on the other hand, are aiming to end their four-game losing streak in this game, after losing to the New York Giants 25-3 last week.

Betting Odds & Lines for This Game

  • Spread: ATL -3 (-105) | CAR +3 (-115)
  • MoneyLine: ATL (-155) | CAR (+135)
  • Total: 45.5 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Falcons vs Panthers Prediction: Spread

The Atlanta Falcons are currently 3-point favorites for this NFC South matchup game. Since the Panthers have struggled a lot this season and especially last week to get any momentum started offensively, I would bet the Falcons to cover the spread. Matt Ryan and the Falcons’ offense has been slowly improving these past few weeks, so I expect them to be able to put points on the board and defeat the Panthers by more than a field goal in this Week 8 game.

Falcons vs Panthers Prediction: MoneyLine

This is a game between the two worst teams in the NFC South, and the Panthers are only worse on paper because the Falcons had a Week 6 bye. I don’t expect to see a lot of good football in this game, but that being said, I do expect the Falcons to be able to pull off a win in this Week 8 NFC South matchup.

The Panthers started off 3-0, and have since lost four games in a row, falling to dead last in their division. Head coach Matt Rhule was forced to bench quarterback Sam Darnold in Sunday’s 25-3 loss to the New York Giants, who are in no way a good team, as they are last in the NFC East. Darnold has thrown for 495 yards, two touchdowns, and five picks over his last three outings.

They are currently operating without running back Christian McCaffrey, and it seems like that has been hurting them a lot. It looks like they need McCaffrey for their offense to run smoothly. This situation showcases why it’s dangerous for professional football teams to build their offenses around runningbacks.

While the Panthers started off the season strong and have since gotten worse, the opposite is true for the Falcons. They lost their first two games, but after a couple adjustment games, they’ve won their last two games and hope to extend their winning streak to three.

Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense has found their groove. Ryan has passed for 678 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception in their past two wins. Tight end Kyle Pitts has made a name for himself. He stunned last week with seven receptions for a 163-yard performance against the Miami Dolphins.

The Falcons defense will have no trouble shutting down Sam Darnold and the rest of the Panthers’ sub-par offense. Considering that and the sudden improvement of the Falcons’ offense, I think that Atlanta will win this NFC South rivalry matchup.

Falcons vs Panthers Prediction: Total

The total for this game is currently set at 45.5. I think that the Panthers’ offensive struggles will prevent them from scoring a lot of points in this game. They only scored three points in Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, a team that is no formidable foe. I think the Falcons will cover the spread, but I would be surprised if both teams combine for over 45.5 points in this game.
