Dolphins vs Texans Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 9

by Allyson ParkNovember 4, 2021
  • Don’t expect an exciting game
  • Can the Dolphins finally get their second win?
  • How bad are the Texans?

In the ninth week of the NFL regular season, the Miami Dolphins (1-7) host the Houston Texans (1-7) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, with kickoff scheduled for Sunday at 1 pm EST.

Both the Dolphins and the Texans are last in their divisions, the AFC East and AFC South, respectively. They will both aim to get their second win of the season in this Week 9 AFC matchup. The Dolphins are entering this game off the heels of a 26-11 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and the Texans just lost to the Los Angeles Rams 38-22 last week.

Betting Odds & Lines for This Game

  • Spread: MIA -6.5 (-105) | HOU +6.5 (-115)
  • MoneyLine: MIA (-290) | HOU (+230)
  • Total: 46.5 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Dolphins vs Texans Prediction: Spread

Even though the Miami Dolphins have been horrendous against the spread this season, I’d bet them to cover the spread this week. The Houston Texans are a terrible team and I would be surprised if the Dolphins aren’t able to win by at least touchdown. In no way am I saying that the Dolphins are good, but I expect them to at least be better than the Texans

Dolphins vs Texans Prediction: MoneyLine

This is going to be a mediocre game between two bad teams, arguably two of the worst teams in the entire league. Neither the Dolphins nor the Texans really have anything to play for anymore, except for their pride and their jobs. Suffice it to say that this won’t really be an interesting game, and it’s more about which team is worse than it is about which team is better.

While I think this will be a physically painful game to watch, I have to go with the Dolphins to win this Week 9 AFC matchup. I just think that Houston is ultimately worse than Miami.

The Dolphins’ playoff hopes have long since been dashed. They won their season opener against the New England Patriots, and they’ve lost seven games consecutively, every game since then. Their offense ranks in the bottom five in points per game, yards per game, and yards per play. Their defense isn’t better at all; they rank in the bottom five in both points and yards per game allowed, and they are the seventh-worst team in yards per play allowed.

Believe it or not, the Texans have been worse than that this season. They might not technically be the worst team in the league, but on paper, they just might be. They rank dead last with an average point differential of -15.2 points per game. That’s pretty bad.

Even though the Dolphins have a terrible record of 1-7, if you look at the scores of their games, they surprisingly have been able to keep the score close. Four of their seven losses have been by three points or less, so to me, it makes sense to say that the Dolphins have a good chance to win this Week 9 game.

Dolphins vs Texans Prediction: Total

The total for this game is 46.5 points. Due to the offensive struggles of both teams, I think the under is the best bet for this game. I expect the Dolphins to win by a touchdown, but I don’t expect them to score a lot of points at all. In addition to that, the Texans have been struggling with offense as well, so I don’t think this game’s point total will surpass 46 points at all.

  • Free Prediction: Under -110
