Colts vs Jets Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 9

by Allyson ParkNovember 3, 2021
  • Mike White looked good against the Bengals
  • Carson Wentz cost the Colts a win last week
  • Which team is worse?

In the ninth week of the NFL regular season, the Indianapolis Colts (3-5) host the New York Jets (2-5) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, with kickoff scheduled for Thursday night at 8:20 pm EST.

The Colts are currently second in the AFC South, and they are hoping to bounce back in this game after their Week 8 overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Jets, on the other hand, are entering this game off the heels of a big upset win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Colts vs Jets Prediction: Spread

While I think that the Indianapolis Colts will cover the spread for this Week 9 game, I don’t think they have what it takes to cover the spread, especially considering the standout performance of Mike White in the Jets’ win over the Bengals last week. I don’t really think it’ll be a nail-biter, but I’d bet the Jets to cover the spread. 10 points is a bit too much for the Colts.

Colts vs Jets Prediction: MoneyLine

Despite the Jets’ rousing and surprising victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, I’m taking the Colts for this Week 9 AFC matchup. Even though the Colts aren’t necessarily a good team, the Jets are worse.

Both these teams have had a rough season so far. The Colts are 3-5, and the Jets are 2-5. However, the Colts are only second in their division, so if they hope to bounce back from a disappointing first half of the season, they better do it quickly. I don’t think the Colts will have much trouble winning this game, but I also don’t think they’ll be able to cover the 10-point spread either.

For me, this game is more about which team is worse, because they’re both not very good. The Colts have a shaky track record, and quarterback Carson Wentz continues to be a disappointment, his sloppy mistakes leading to a late loss against the Titans last week.

The Jets, led offensively by Zach Wilson, have also been struggling on all sides. However, Wilson suffered a knee injury in the Colts’ Week 7 loss to the New England Patriots, and second-string quarterback Mike White made his NFL debut and really stepped up to earn the upset win against the Bengals on Sunday, throwing for 405 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks.

I don’t think that the Jets have what it takes to pull off their third win in a row (and third win of the season,) but I think that White’s performance will be decent enough for the Jets to cover the spread. I think that 10 points is a bit of a wide margin for this Thursday Night Football matchup, especially if White plays well again. Under his offensive leadership, the Jets almost looked like a different team.

That being said, I’m still sticking with the Colts to pull off a win in this game. They need all the wins they can get, and if Carson Wentz can manage to not spiral out of control, they should be able to win this Thursday.

Colts vs Jets Prediction: Total

I’m a little conflicted on the points total for this game, but I’d bet the over. Despite issues on offense, these teams haven’t exactly been struggling to score points. Since there’s a lot on the line for the Colts, they should bring their A-game, and under the leadership of Mike White, the Jets should also be able to make more of an impact offensively than they have in previous games. I would expect them to combine for over 46 points.
