The Colts traded for Carson Wentz in the offseason expecting that he could quickly be a franchise QB. However, the Colts are only 2-4 this season but are 2-1 in their last three.

The 49ers are 2-3 on the season but are winless at home. Much like the Colts, the 49ers drafted rookie QB Trey Lance with the expectation he, too, could be their franchise QB. Lance has a completion percentage of 52.1%, 350 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

Both teams trail their respective division leaders, and this game could help them get back into the playoff race.

Colts vs 49ers Prediction: Spread

It is not a perfect metric by any means, but I always look at teams’ records against the spread; it tells me how Vegas values specific teams and how accurate that valuation is.

The Colts are 4-2 against the spread, which tells me that Vegas undervalues the Colts to some extent. Their only losses against the spread came at the hands of the Seahawks and the Titans.

The 49ers, meanwhile, are 1-4 against the spread, which tells me that Vegas may overvalue the 49ers to some extent. Their only win came in Week 2 against the Eagles when they were 3 point favorites and won 17-11.

So I think that the Colts should cover utilizing their records against the spread and my belief that this game is going to be close.

Colts vs 49ers Prediction: MoneyLine

Despite boasting two sub-five hundred teams, I think this game will be one of the better games this weekend. Both the 49ers and Colts have been in every single game and are a few plays away from having a winning record.

Neither team is by any means an offensive juggernaut.

By Lineups, the 49ers rank 10th in the NFL but dominate neither the passing nor rushing categories. They are so good because they rank 1st in turnovers allowed, 5th in sacks allowed, and second in their red-zone efficiency.

The Colts rank 27th offensively, with their only strength being their rushing attack which ranks 10th in rushing yards and 16th in rushing touchdowns.

On the flip side, both of these teams are pretty good defensively; the 49ers rank 6th, and the Colts defense rank 13th.

The 49ers dominate against the pass, ranking 1st in passing yards against, second in completions allowed, and are top-10 against the run. The Colts are good, but not as good as the 49ers. They struggle more against the pass and run than the 49ers do but rank fourth in turnovers forced.

Because the 49ers’ offense seldom gives up a turnover, but the Colts’ strength is forcing turnovers, I think the 49ers are likely to have the advantage on that side of the ball. I also believe that the 49ers will have an edge against the Colts defensively as they should be able to pressure Wentz and force him into bad throws and sack him possibly forcing a fumble.

However, these advantages are, in my opinion, slight, so I still think the game will be close.

Colts vs 49ers Prediction: Total

As I discussed in the Moneyline section, neither one of these teams is an offensive superpower, and both are good defensively.

Because of that, I think that this game is going to hit the under on the total. The 49ers are 2-3 in their games, beating the total, and the Colts are 3-3.

I know I said 24-21 in favor of the 49ers, but I think that is likely to be a little higher of a score; I could just as easily see it being 20-17. Either way, both results hit the under.
