Chargers vs Chiefs Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 3

by Allyson ParkSeptember 23, 2021
  • Expect a close division rivalry game
  • Chargers need to score touchdowns, not settle for field goals
  • Chiefs defense needs work

In the third week of the regular season, the Los Angeles Chargers travel to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas City Chiefs. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 1pm!

Both these teams are looking to make their record 2-1 and improve their standings in the AFC West. They are also both coming off the heels of heartbreaking Week 2 losses; the Chargers fell to the Dallas Cowboys by a field goal, and the Chiefs lost to the Baltimore Ravens by a singular point.

Betting Odds & Lines for This Game

  • Spread: LA +6.5 (-110) | KC -6.5 (-110)
  • MoneyLine: LA (+250) | KC (-320)
  • Total: 55.0 — Over (-110) | Under (-110)

Chargers vs Chiefs Prediction: Spread

The Kansas City Chiefs are current favorites for this game, and if they are only able to improve on their defensive game, they should be able to cover the spread at -6.5 points. This will definitely be a close game, but if they can prevent the Chargers from scoring touchdowns (something they have been struggling with anyway,) then they will cover the spread for this Week 3 game.

Chargers vs Chiefs Prediction: MoneyLine

It seems like Week 3 is filled with many close matchups, and this division rival game is certainly no exception. Expect a good and close game, as both these teams look to make their record 2-1 and fight to not be dead last in the AFC West.

The Chargers have a good history against the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, and they also are in desperate need of a win after losing in an embarrassing game against the Baltimore Ravens last week. However, their offense, in particular, has been struggling as of late, as they have been unable to score points, especially touchdowns, as efficiently as they should.

Chargers vs Chiefs Prediction Patrick Mahomes

Justin Herbert has only completed 8 of 16 passes in the red zone, which is a huge problem, especially when it comes to close division matchups like this. The Chargers simply can’t afford to settle for field goals in this game.

On the Chiefs side, their defense has been going through some struggles as well. They just can’t stop teams from scoring on them. They have allowed touchdowns every time any of their opponents have made it inside the 20-yard line this season so far. They also allowed a combined 404 passing and rushing yards these past two weeks.

This is going to be a rough game for both these teams. They both have a plethora of things to work on, tweak, and improve, but I think that the Chiefs will win in the end. Their defense might be struggling, but they might do all right against the Chargers’ lethargic offense. And Patrick Mahomes is always a solid player to have on your side, so bet the Chiefs to win this close game.

  • Free Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs -6.5

Chargers vs Chiefs Prediction: Total

The total for this game is 55 points, which I feel like is really high, I don’t think I’ve seen a predicted points total over 50 points yet for this season. The oddsmakers are undecided for this game, but I think that the under is a solid bet. Scoring might be an issue for the Chargers in particular, so I don’t expect these teams to combine for 55 or more points.

  • Free Prediction: Under -110
