49ers vs Seahawks Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 4

by Tom ZwillerSeptember 30, 2021
  • Trey Lance will score a rushing touchdown.
  • Neither Russell Wilson nor Jimmy G will throw an interception.
  • The 49ers will rush for more than 100 yards.

Coming into the season, many people had picked the NFC West to be the hardest division in football, boasting the LA Rams with new QB Matthew Stafford, a now-healthy 49ers team, the division champion Seattle Seahawks, and the up and coming Arizona Cardinals. Three weeks into the season and the prediction has absolutely held up.

The LA Rams are 3-0 and have looked dominant this season, beating the Bears and Colts and then handling the defending champion Buccaneers. The Arizona Cardinals haven’t been as dominant, needing a little bit of luck to help them beat the Vikings, but also sit atop the division at 3-0.

Then there are the 49ers and the Seahawks. The 49ers are 2-1, after making the fatal mistake of giving the ball back to Aaron Rodgers with 37 seconds left in the game. The Seahawks started out 1-0 but lost in back-to-back games to the Titans and Vikings and have fallen to 1-2.

Both teams need to win this game to get back in the division race, but the question is: who will?

49ers vs Seahawks Prediction: Spread

I have to admit, I’m surprised by how close this spread is; I would’ve imagined a few more points in favor of the 49ers. The Seahawks are 1-2 with their win coming over the winless Colts. The 49ers meanwhile are a mere 37 seconds away from being 3-0.
So, -3 feels easy enough for the 49ers to beat, but have the 49ers performance well against the spread this year? The answer is not really.

Both teams are 1-2 against the spread this year. The Seahawks got their win in Week 1 against the Colts and then the other two games they were favored in. The 49ers meanwhile, allowed the Lions to cover in Week 1, beat the Eagles outright and then lost to the Packers. So the two teams’ respective record against the spread is a push.

I anticipate the 49ers being able to beat their spread of -3. This game appears to me to be like the Vikings Seahawks game, where the Vikings ran the ball effectively and were able to slow down Seattle. Should that happen again, the Seahawks will not be able to keep this one close and the 49ers should be able to beat a surprisingly close spread.

49ers vs Seahawks Prediction: MoneyLine

In all three of Seattle’s games this season they have struggled to stop the run: they allowed the Colts 113 rushing yards the Titans 212 and the Vikings 140. I 100% expect this trend to continue against the 49ers whose rush attack averages 105 yards a game (ranks 16th in the NFL).

49ers vs Seahawks Predictions Kyle Shanahan

That 16th ranking may feel underwhelming but the Kyle Shanahan offense can figure out a way to run the ball efficiently. With the expectation of his first year with the 49ers, Shannahan has never coached a rushing offense ranked lower than 16th. In their Super Bowl run, they were ranked second.

On the flip side of the ball, I expect the 49ers to slow down Russell Wilson (not stop him because you do not stop Wilson). I personally think that the 49ers’ defense will be the best the Seahawks have faced so far this season and Seattle will struggle accordingly.

49ers vs Seahawks Prediction: Total

I think this game should hit the under. As I said above, I simply don’t anticipate the 49ers struggling to score. However, I think they are more likely to run the ball in this matchup, so their possessions should be longer even if they still result in scores.

The question with Seattle is can they score. The Vikings were able to shut Russell Wilson down, they sacked him twice, blitzing six times, hurrying him seven times, hitting him three times, and pressuring him twelve times (courtesy of Pro Football Reference). Those were all-season highs for Wilson, and they led to a season-low in points.

So, with the 49ers more likely to efficiently run the ball resulting in long drives and the Seahawks struggling to score as Wilson faces a tough defense, I expect this one to hit the under.
