49ers vs Cardinals Prediction & NFL Odds for Week 5

by Tom ZwillerOctober 8, 2021
  • Trey Lance will start for the 49ers.
  • Kyler Murray will score a rushing touchdown.
  • Kyler Murray will throw an interception.

Coming into the season, the NFC West was billed as the most competitive division in the NFL. Four weeks into the season, the division certainly has lived up to the hype.
The Arizona Cardinals are the last team to remain undefeated after beating the Rams in a shocking upset, 37-20. Kyler Murray is playing at an MVP level, boasting a 76.1% completion percentage, passing for 1,273 yards, nine touchdowns, and adding another 109 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

The San Francisco 49ers, meanwhile, have struggled in their last two games to fall to 2-2 on the season. They lost to the Packers after leaving Aaron Rodgers 37 seconds to help secure a game-winning field goal and then to the Seahawks trailing by as much as 21-7. To add insult to injury, Jimmy Garapolo was injured during the Week 4 loss, and his availability in Week 5 is in jeopardy.

Betting Odds & Lines for This Game

49ers vs Cardinals Prediction: Spread

Thus far through the season, the Arizona Cardinals are 3-1 against the spread, while the San Fransico 49ers are 1-3. The Cardinals’ only loss to the spread comes against the Minnesota Vikings, whereas the 49ers’ lone win came against the Eagles in Week 2.

I like the Cardinals to beat the spread here. They have scored over 30 points in every game this season, with their lowest total coming in Week 3 against the Jaguars.
Arizona simply has an overwhelming offense, ranking 3rd in passing yards and 6th in rushing yards while being lethal in the red zone, ranking 1st in red-zone touchdowns and 8th in red zone touchdown percentage.

The 49ers’ defense, meanwhile, ranks 16th in rushing yards, 16th in red zone attempts, and 26th in red-zone percentage. The Cardinals should simply outscore the 49ers and beat the spread.

49ers vs Cardinals Prediction: MoneyLine

The 49ers struggled offensively against the Seahawks in Week 4. The 49ers had punted three times before the half, fumbled, and Jimmy G threw an interception.

Luckily for the 49ers, Seattle was having an equally slow offensive day. Russell Wilson passed for 149 yards and two touchdowns, while Seattle added another 105 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

The 49ers will not be able to have such a slow start against the Arizona Cardinals. In their four games thus far, the Cardinals average 20 points in the first half, a mark the 49ers have only reached only once this season in Week 1 against Detroit.

However, just because Arizona is good on offense does not mean they are bad on the defensive side of the ball; the Cardinals only allow an average of 21 points against. The 49ers, meanwhile, allow an average of 25 points against.

I expect the Cardinals to jump out to an early lead and not let it go, much like in their game against the Rams.

  • Free Prediction: The Arizona Cardinals will beat the San Francisco 49ers.

49ers vs Cardinals Prediction: Prediction: Total

My initial thought was that the two teams would combine to hit the over on the total. The Cardinals have a great offense that can often score early, and the 49ers will be forced to try and keep pace with them.

However, both teams are 2-2 in hitting the over on the total. When the total is set to 50, the teams combine to go 3-3, which is essentially a 50-50 shot.

But, I think it is worth noting that these figures include significant outliers, namely the 49ers vs. Lions game in Week 1 and the Cardinals Rams game in Week 4. Removing those games, the teams are 1-3 against the total when set to 50+. So I am going to take the under here, as it is set to 52.5.

  • Free Prediction: The 49ers Cardinals game will hit the under.
