North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Prediction & NCAAF Odds for Week 1
- Welcome to our North Carolina vs Virginia Tech prediction
- This ACC showdown should light up the scoreboard
- UNC should be on high upset alert
There are eight games on the Friday slate in College Football’s true opening weekend, but most of the country will be tuned into this ACC matchup North Carolina vs Virginia Tech. The Heels are the lone ranked team (according to the preseason rankings) in action on the Friday card, as they prepare for a hostile crowd in Blacksburg.
The offenses were on full display a year ago when UNC out-gunned the Hokies 56-45 in Chapel Hill. North Carolina jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never trailed, but Va Tech made it interesting in the second half, crawling within five by the end of the third quarter.

This marks North Carolina’s highest ranking to start a season since 1997 in Mack Brown’s first stint as head coach that led an undefeated squad into a November showdown with Florida State.
Va Tech had their string of 27 consecutive bowl seasons snapped a year ago after finishing 2020 with a 5-6 record. The Hokies are 0-9 SU in season openers against Top-10 opponents, but 6-3 SU against North Carolina at home overall.
Rankings at this point in the season only benefit ratings. The line is more important and this one indicates a raucous crowd will play a part in the outcome (last year’s matchup only featured 7% capacity).
- North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Free Prediction: Virginia Tech +5.5
As noted, the line feels low for a top-10 team against an unranked opponent, but ultimately we feel that UNC will pull it out, just not as comfortably as they might have hoped/expected to kick off a season with really high expectations.
The Heels are led by Sam Howell, a QB with legit Heisman aspirations and he should eventually be able to light it up against a suspect Hokie secondary. He lost, arguably, the best running back tandem in the country to the NFL, so that will take some time to work itself out, but Howell is talented enough to overcome any early-season shortcomings.
- North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Free Prediction: North Carolina (-216)
These two combined for over 100 points last year. Howell has thrown for the most touchdowns through his first two seasons in ACC history. Va Tech allowed 32.1 points per game last year while the Tar Heels scored more than 40 per contest.
It might take a minute or two for the barrage to commence, so consider waiting and placing a live-line over bet, but 64 shouldn’t be an issue either.
- North Carolina vs Virginia Tech Free Prediction: Over 64 (-115)
