Duke vs North Carolina Prediction & College Football Odds for Week 5

by Ryan BurksOctober 1, 2021
  • North Carolina gets back on track with a big win over Duke
  • Duke battles for three quarters, but can’t sustain it for four quarters
  • Defenses control offenses to keep the betting total under

The 2-2 North Carolina Tar Heels host the 3-1 Duke Blue Devils on Saturday for a big matchup in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Despite having a better record, Duke is a massive underdog in this game against their biggest rival in the country.

Duke has won three straight games after getting upset by Charlotte in the season opener. The Blue Devils have an impressive win over Nebraska, but this will be their toughest test of the season.

North Carolina now has a pair of losses on the season, and that includes a blowout loss last weekend against Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels still have a shot at winning the ACC, but they can’t afford any more losses.

Duke vs North Carolina Prediction: Spread

The spread for this matchup looks a little off at first glance, especially when you look at the records for each team. North Carolina is clearly the more talented team in this game, but Duke comes into this game with plenty of momentum.

The Tar Heels have not been explosive on offense so far this season, but that unit is going to start clicking again at some point. Duke is giving up 26 points per game, and this could be the game where North Carolina gets going.

The fact that this is a rivalry game should keep the spread tight for awhile, but North Carolina just has too much talent. The Tar heels are winning this game by at least three touchdowns to cover this spread.

Duke vs North Carolina Prediction: MoneyLine

North Carolina is a favorite at -1100 on the moneyline in this rivalry game, and you don’t usually ever wanna make a bet with those odds. That would leave you with Duke at +700, but the Blue Devils aren’t good enough to pull off this upset.

Even though North Carolina has struggled to begin the 2021 season, the Tar Heels are clearly better, and they are playing this game at home. Even if Duke is somehow able to keep it close, North Carolina wins this game.

  • Free Prediction: North Carolina -1100

Duke vs North Carolina Prediction: Total

Both of these teams are scoring more than 37 points per game, but some of those stats are inflated against some bad teams. North Carolina does have an offense that can continue to put up those numbers, but it’s hard to see Duke doing much scoring in this game.

The Tar Heels are going to have to find some defense at some point, and that unit should give its best effort of the season on Saturday. North Carolina should dominate the time of possession, and that will keep Duke from scoring much.

These two teams can easily combine for at least 60 points, but its hard to see that total getting anywhere near 73.0
