Angels at Blue Jays Betting Preview Angels ML
Angels at Blue Jays Betting Preview: The Los Angeles Angels (4-2) will be taking on the Toronto Blue Jays (3-3) at TD Ballpark in Buffalo.
The Blue Jays will have a pre-game ceremony honoring outfielder Teoscar Hernandez’s accomplishment of winning the 2020 Silver Slugger Award. Playing in a temporary location did not stop them from making the playoffs in the shortened 2020 season.
The Toronto Blue Jays will look to bounce back at home after they dropped two straight games against the Rangers The Blue Jays are playing in Buffalo once again where they played due to COVID restrictions that led them to find a temporary home.TD Ballpark is a AAA ballpark and benefits the power hitters on both sides.
On the other side, Los Angeles will look to spoil their home opener as the team mostly relies on their bats as their pitching staff is a bit on the weaker end of the league. However, the team has one of their better pitchers on the hill tomorrow night.
LOS ANGELES ANGELS PREVIEW
Griffin Canning, a right-handed pitcher, will be making his first start on the mound this season for the Angels against the Toronto Blue Jays. Last season in the shortened 2020 season, he had a 2-3 record, a 3.99 ERA, and a 1.37 WHIP in 56.1 innings of work. Canning was the second-best pitcher behind Dylan Bundy who had a breakout season.
It is hard to predict what he will do as he is a young pitcher. Last season he was better against left-handed batters.
Hitters hit a .232 average with a .311 wOBA in 26.0 innings. On the other hand, right-handed batters hit .278 with a .345 wOBA in 30.1 innings.
Canning’s fastball avg. velo, slider avg. velo and changeup avg. velo has dropped from the 2019 season to the 2020 season.
His curveball’s avg. velo has gone up so 2021 will be interesting for the young pitcher,
Ross Stripling struggles against righties and they can have a lineup of seven righties and one switch-hitter like Dexter Fowler who can get to him early. If they cannot get to him early, they will need Canning to go at least 6 innings, and their bullpen struggles.
TORONTO BLUE JAYS PREVIEW
Ross Stripling did not have a good outing against the New York Yankees in his season debut. Stripling just lasted 3.1 innings after allowing three runs on seven hits, gave up two walks, and striking out five.
He came over to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade as the Blue Jays did not have a strong starting rotation after Hyun Jin Ryu. Stripling has not really produced since getting dealt.
Stripling is also a righty, had a very bad year, and struggled against righties. Last season he was better against left-handed batters.
Hitters hit .220 average with a .312 wOBA in 26.2 innings. On the other hand, right-handed batters hit .343 with a .433 wOBA in 22.2 innings.
Stripling will probably go three to four innings, and the Blue Jays will have to rely on their bullpen to get them through the game.
Last season, the Jays bullpen also struggled ranking 8th in XFIP and 15th in bullpen ERA. The Jays will probably only have two or three lefties against Canning.
The dimensions of the ballpark are very small, and getting to Stripling has not been hard to do for many teams. This game can certainly go over the total, but the under/over is 10. The matchup favors the Angels to win outright at +100.
