UFC Fight Night: Gane vs Volkov
UFC Fight Night returns to the APEX in Las Vegas Saturday, June 26th. The card features a clash of UFC heavyweight contenders Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov. Both men are ranked in the top 5 in the division and are looking to move into the number 1 contender spot.
Gane vs Volkov Preview and Picks
This a fairly big fight for the future of the heavyweight division. Ciryl Gane (8-0) is undefeated in his young career and is already fighting in his 2nd main event in the UFC. Alexander Volkov (33-8) is only 32, one year older than Gane, but is definitely the far more experienced fighter.
Gane is the number 3 ranked contender, and Volkov is number 5. Both guys are coming off of main event wins and looking to insert themselves into the title conversation. Gane is coming off of a 5 round win against Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Volkov, a 2nd round knockout of Alistair Overeem.
Volkov has finished 24 of his 33 wins, and Gane has finished 6 of 8. Although Volkov holds a 3-inch reach advantage, Gane has a 1-inch reach advantage himself.
Gane, with just 5 UFC appearances, has not been tested by the same talent as Volkov. However, Ciryl has shown up and dominated every single fight since he entered the UFC. Volkov has an impressive chin, only being knocked out twice in the heavyweight division, while Gane’s has not been tested.
I see this fight playing out on the feet because both men have good wrestling credentials. Gane is going to hold a power advantage, but I think Volkov will be the more technically sound striker. I think Volkov’s kicks are going to be the key to his success in this fight.
From what I have seen from Gane, he knows how to stay out of trouble. He dominated Rozenstruik in a boring fight, but a tactical domination by Gane. If Gane picks his shots and avoids the leg kicks and power shots from Volkov, I think he can continue his run through this division. I can even see Gane ending this fight early in an attempt to make a statement.
Ciryl Gane (-163)
Fight to go the distance – No (-120)
Ciryl Gane inside the distance (+200)
Saint Preux vs Boser Preview and Picks
This is an interesting bout. Ovince Saint Preux (25-15) is moving up to heavyweight to face Tanner Boser (19-8). Ovince has said the weight would not be an issue for him, having already competed in the division before this bout.
I think weight is, in fact, going to play a factor in this fight. Saint Preux is an amazing fighter, but when he moved up to fight Ben Rothwell, we did not see him have much success. He was not able to wrestle Rothwell and did not hurt him in the fight.
Tanner Boser is coming off of 2 decision losses. As an unranked fighter, he is going to be fighting extremely hard for a win. He has big power with 10 wins by KO.
I think the weight is going to play to Boser’s advantage, and I think he will win the fight if it stays on the feet.
Tanner Boser (-188)
