Iowa State vs West Virginia Prediction & College Football Odds for Week 9

by Ryan BurksOctober 26, 2021
  • Defenses play a key role in this Big 12 showdown
  • West Virginia keeps things tight at home.
  • Iowa State stays red-hot by winning their fourth game in a row.

The Big 12 Conference is once again one of the most competitive leagues in the country, and the conference continues to produce some surprising results. The West Virginia Mountaineers host the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday in what should be a terrific game.

Iowa State has now won three straight games after struggling a bit to begin the season. The Cyclones have improved their record to 5-2 on the year, but they haven’t been as dominant as Iowa State fans had hoped.

West Virginia snapped a rough three-game losing streak in their most recent game against TCU. The Mountaineers are still just 3-4 on the year and they have some work to do if they want to become bowl eligible.

Iowa State vs West Virginia Prediction: Spread

The overall numbers for each team are extremely similar, but the big difference is in the records. Playing on the road in the Big 12 Conference is never easy, and the Cyclones are going to have to play extremely well to win.

Iowa State is giving up just 17.0 points per game, and that defense will come up huge in this matchup. Scoring for the Cyclones has been a challenge at times, and West Virginia can get some stops as well.

Seven points is a pretty large spread for a pair of Big 12 programs that have some Top 25 wins this season. This game is going to go back-and-forth and one score will be the difference.

This feels like it will be another disappointing close loss for West Virginia, but they will cover the spread yet again.

Iowa State vs West Virginia Prediction: MoneyLine

There is some betting value on each side of the moneyline in this game, even though betting on the home team would produce a bigger payout. West Virginia is going to keep this game close, but it’s just hard to see them finding enough offense to come away with a win.

Iowa State comes into Morgantown with a ton of momentum, and they are still trying to make a run at the Big 12 Conference championship. The Cyclones appear to have corrected some mistakes from earlier in the year, and they have a veteran group that knows how to win.

West Virginia has lost a number of close games already this season, including a three-point loss to Texas Tech at home. The Mountaineers have proven that they can play with most teams, but they just can’t figure out how to win.

Iowa State vs West Virginia Prediction: Total

Most Big 12 Conference games are high-scoring affairs, but that isn’t how this game will be won. These two teams have been playing great on the defensive side of the football, and this will be a game that is won by playing the field position battle.

Iowa State rushed for 170 yards per game this season, and West Virginia can pick up yards on the ground as well. While both teams have shown the ability to hit on big plays, don’t expect many in this one.

24 points might be enough to win this game, and the two teams are going to struggle to combine for at least 40 points. It’s not often that you bet on the under in the Big 12 Conference, but this is one of the opportunities.
